A special feature series that shares the story of Otaru through the lens of local craftsmanship.
In this installment, we reflect on the memories and history of a town that flourished through trade via the Kitamae ships. Alongside the story of Otaru’s development, which grew alongside the prosperity of the herring fishery, we introduce “Kitamae Route: Otaru—All About the Sea.”
[Otaru and Herring]
During the Edo period, three “trading posts” were established along the coast near Otaru: Otarunai, Takashima (Shikuzushi), and Oshoro. Initially, vassals of the Matsumae Domain conducted trade with the Ainu people at these sites.
Later, when the “market concession system” operated by merchants began, herring fishing flourished, utilizing both the Ainu people and migrant fishermen from southern Hokkaido. At that time, herring was highly valued as “fertilizer (shime-kasu)” for cotton and indigo fields and was transported in large quantities by Kitamae ships to regions such as Hokuriku, the Seto Inland Sea, and Osaka.
Toward the end of the Edo period, as the center of the herring fishery shifted to the Shiribeshi region, Takashima and Oshoro came to be known as the “Sengoku Fishing Grounds.” Migrant Japanese fishermen began settling along the coast of Otaru, and by around Meiji 30, Otaru alone recorded a catch of 90,000 metric tons. The extent of the wealth amassed by herring fishing masters and others can be gauged from the remains of the fishing huts and stone warehouses still standing in Otaru.
[All About the Sea]
From the mid-Edo period through the Meiji era, the Kitamae ships connected the sea routes between Osaka and Hokkaido, transporting all manner of goods and culture and contributing to Hokkaido’s development. This series pays tribute to the memories and history of the towns that flourished through Kitamae trade, delivering the seafood transported from Otaru to the Kansai region.
